Greenwood, INA: Architect charges vs. Design/Build
You can hire an architect. Their fees will vary depending on who you talk to. However, you may have another option. You could investigate hiring a design/build remodeling company that will handle everything from design through construction. This has many advantages. Most importantly, in most circumstances your costs will be cheaper versus hiring a separate architect to do the designs and a separate contractor to do the construction. Also, their is less chance of mis-communication with one firm handling all.

Select a competent, reliable company whose work you admire, and engage them in the Design Process right away. By doing so they will have a good understanding of your project goals and also a feel for the level of craftsmanship and quality of materials you expect. Work with a Design AND Build firm to fine tune your job costs. based on a well thought out and budget driven design. An architect/contractor team approach ensures that a client has a single point of responsibility for the combined efforts on their behalf. Clients are often afraid of losing the ability to comparison shop when hiring a design and build team. They should select two professionals they feel comfortable with and trust. That trust must be earned by the contractor and the architect through the level of expertise and input they provide during the design and budgeting process. Work together with an architect/contractor team during the design process to estimate and fine tune your budget based on a well thought out and cost driven design.
