Q: I have a clogged drain. Do I need to buy a snake?
I have a clogged drain and Draino doesn't seem to fix it. Can I do it myself if I buy a snake? I'd rather not hire an expensive plumber.

I would recommend not using Draino and getting the drain cleared. Most drains clog within 3' of the trap, so a manual 3/8" snake is a good way for a home owner to maintain most drain problems. They are available for less than $20. Open the trap, slide in the snake until you feel the clog, spin the snake 3-5 times and pull out the clog (have a pan under the trap to catch the water and clog). That being said, if a manual snake does not fix your problem, call a licensed plumber because you most likely have a main line blockage and any money spent hiring some one else to deal with that is money well spent. There is a lot of things in your pipes that are not pleasant, be prepared for a stinky, dirty residue to come out of your pipes and coat your snake, clothing and gloves.
