Q: Are there cleaning products and techniques that will keep a bathroom shower in better shape over time?
Are there any cleaners or techniques that pros recommend to keep a shower in good shape over the years? Thanks.
A: Shower maintenance
The key to keeping a shower looking good is regular, daily maintenance. If you let this get out of hand, you can expect to curse your shower each time you finally realize its time to be cleaned. What makes shower's dirty is the buildup of water minerals and the accumulation of soap scum. When the water sits for long and the minerals begin to crystallize along with the soap scum, this is when the mildew begins. The easiest way to clean a shower is to clean it while its still wet. Keep a towel nearby specifically for cleaning. Before you get out, wipe down the walls, floor and shower door if applicable. I was told by someone who does this that it makes cleaning almost not necessary. For glass shower doors, clean them as best you can, then use a product such as "rain-x" or similar on the glass. This will make future cleaning much easier. In fact, glass shower doors and enclosures can now be made with this type of product pre-applied at the factory. Its definately worth the extra money in my opinion.
As far as cleaning tile, be sure to clean with something that wont harm the materials. If you have a natural stone tile, there are certain cleaners that are "neutral" and wont harm the surfaces. Also, its a good idea to keep the stone tiles and the grout sealed which will also minimize cleaning. Hope that helps.
