Q: Would it be hard to put up crown molding myself or should I hire a contractor?
Putting up crown molding does not seem too complex of a project. Am I missing something? Should I hire a professional for this or is this something I can do myself? What are the tricky parts?

Austin, TXA: Installing Crown Molding
Even for someone with a background in carpentry Crown Molding can be challenge the first few times. If you are a DIY I would first suggest getting extra material because you will probably make at least a couple wrong cuts. You also need the right size power miter saw (12" or compound sliding) and air nailer.
If you get a book on the subject I would get one from Taunton Press the publishers of Fine Homebuilding and Fine Woodworking.
A TIP for doing Crown by yourself is to make a stick with a bracket on it to hold the other end of the crown in the air while you nail your end. You can also tack a small block under the other end if you don't mind touching up the wall later.
