Q: Mounting a flat screen above your fireplace - classy or cheesy?
Okay, time to be honest all you decorators and interior designers out there. Is it okay to hang your flat screen above your fireplace or is that a cheeseball maneuver? I have plenty of bachelor friends who do this, but I'm just not sure about this one. But, you let me know. What are your thoughts? I just bought a condo recently and I'll be making this decision relatively soon. Thanks.

Not necessarily cheesy, but...it isn't the best place for a TV. When you have a TV mounted about the fireplace it is usually too high for comfortable viewing. You typically want the TV to be positioned at eye level.
There are folks who have homes where they have no other spot to put the TV, except over the fireplace. It that is your case, try dressing up the TV by adding a frame around it. There are companies out there that specifically make frames to go around your flat panel TV.
One other thing to consider. If you are going to mount your TV above the fireplace, consider painting that wall an accent color and try something in the dark brown range. That way when someone looks at that wall, and they will as the fireplace is usually the focal point, the TV won't be take the attention away from the true focal point.

Cheesy! Also, it's way too high for viewing. Build a cabinet next to the fireplace and mount it lower for a more custom and classy look.

Custom Home Theater LLC
Sharpsburg, GAA: Flat panel TV install above the fireplace
The fireplace is usually the focal point of all living rooms and dens.
You would most likely align your furniture looking towards the fireplace.
The TV would then need to be symmetrically balanced based on the seating position and centered in the room.
Don't worry about the placement of the cable/satellite box, blu-ray DVD player, or surround sound receiver, these can all be hidden in a closet or adjacent wall in an equipment rack.
All devices are controlled via a single infrared or radio frequency universal remote.
Flat panel displays can be secured with a flat or with a tilting mount.
Custom trim can be added to present the display with a "built-in' look
We have provided a custom picture frame with art work that camouflages your display when not in use and with the touch of a single button, simply "rolls out of the way" when the TV powers on.
