You will need a minor saw, small crow bar, a leval, a tape measure (remember measure twice cut once), a hammer, a punch to sink your nails and some finish nails(1.5 inches).A coulpe of tips. Use the small bar to remove old base (if any), be careful not to damage walls and flooring(cut old cualk beed with a exacto knfe before removle), try to buy preprimed wood base, apply one caot of finish paint before install, after instalation is complete putty, caulk and paint one more coat. This is fairly simple and gives a fresh new look to any room.
Good luck, take your time and try to injoy your work.

I almost forgot. The way to know how much base you will need is to measure the lenth of each wall (eg if a wall is eight ft long then you will need a ten footer. Allow for mistakes and extra trips to the store, you will forget some things that is normal. Buy wood base not MDF that stuff is crap.

A:
MDF stands for medium density fiberboard by the way. It's not necessarily crap, but rather a cheaper alternative to expensive wood base or other wood modlings. You can't stain it like wood but if you are looking for something cheap, fairly durable, and paint worthy then MDF is fine.
