Q: What kind of stones work well for a fireplace?
I am redoing my fireplace in my living room and I've seen some beautiful fireplaces that look really cozy, kinda like a cottage. What kind of stones should I use to get that cottage-like feeling?

If you're thinking to use actual rocks, river rock is your best bet, although it gives a space a distinctly lodge-like feel... which is fine if that's what you're after, but can be a little challenging for resale, and are notoriously difficult to work with. Slate and limestone can give you a similar earthy, rustic feel, without being quite so heavy, and are much easier to deal with if you're thinking of tackling this as a DIY project. (Which I would only recommend, btw, if you are an experienced weekend warrior - otherwise save yourself a huge headache and hire a pro.)

Wantagh, NYA: Stone for a fireplace
Nothing can add more character to a room than a fireplace. They come in all sizes, small, for a cozy appeal to large and grand. One of the mistakes that are made is to make the fireplace out of scale to the room or home that it is in. Another mistake is to make the fireplace too "trendy"-- A fireplace is a big expense, the style should be tasteful and timeless to match any style. A stone fireplace can be rustic and beautiful. We have done a couple of fireplaces, and the easiest product to use is the faux stone. The reason that we like it is because there is no real issue about the weight of the stone. On a real stone fireplace, poured foundation is necessary because of the weight. It used to be that faux stone looked fake, or unnatural that is not the case any more. We get many compliments on our fireplaces. For more ideas on fireplaces , look at our site at www.LongIslandKitchenandBath.com

Man we stayed in this killer cabin last year and the fire place was all raw granit with a huge harth stone. The stones were supprisingly flat too. I would sugest go ona a trip to the mountains and stay in a cabin or a lodge and get some good ideas and a little R&R.
