Q: Any recommendations of a good paint color for a girl's nursery?
I'm preggers and nesting (big time)! I am getting the nursery ready for my little one and am having a hard time deciding on a good paint color for her room. I'm thinking shades of pink, but am totally open to other "girly" colors. Any ideas?

Obviously pink is the default girl color, but a very light yellow or a pastelly green (think light mint) is beautiful and can be accessorized with pink highlights (pillows, rug, blankets, window treatment etc.)
Take into consideration what exposure your baby's nursery has. If is is North facing a friendly, sunny yellow will brighten the room. For a South facing room I would probably select a cooler green.

If you want a feminine color but are re-thinking using the traditional "powder pink", then I would suggest giving lavenders and lilacs a try. Shades like this have the same girly connotation as pink, but with a cooled down, tranquil touch because of the blended blues. Also, I think these would prove to be an easier transition into older ages (kids and teen decor) than would a baby pink, which can be easily outgrown.

Pick a color that YOU love and that makes YOU feel good. Your little one won't really notice the color for a couple years, but YOU want to feel upbeat and happy, even after only a few hours of sleep and a daylong cranky baby!. Painting your daughter's room in a few years is an easy and inexpensive decor change, and when she is old enough to care about the color, let her pick what she likes.
The late Tony Torrice, a great color theorist, and wonderful, caring designer, recommended letting kids pick paint colors from a deck, like choosing a card from a deck of cards. He believed that they will choose the color they NEED for their own well being and health. I highly recommend his, and Ro Logrippo's books, In My Room - Designing For & With Children, and In My World - Designing Living & Learning Environments. VERY INTERESTING reading!
Another important thing to remember when choosing your paint - use Zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) Paint for a healthy indoor environment for you and your family. Every major manufacturer has offerings of Zero VOC paint with great color palettes. It's more expensive, but worth the few dollars extra. The 'stuff' you introduce into your baby's life can impact her health, so research what it's all made out of to be sure it's OK.
And ENJOY your nesting and your new little girl!
