Q: Painting - DIY or hire professional painters?
We're thinking of repainting a few of the larger rooms in our house. How much better is it to go with pros, instead of doing it yourself? Besides saving me a lot of effort, what are professional painters going to do better than I can? How much more is it likely to cost me? ...To be honest, I'm not really looking forward to this project. If you could give me some reasons for hiring professional painters, I'd be happy to relay them to my wife! lol. Thanks.

Leeds, NYA: Why Hire A Profesional House Painter
Thinking about a home painting project? You will need to decide whether or not to hire a painting contractor or do the work yourself. A professional house painting contractor has two things many homeowners do not, experience and expertise.
Painting projects require specialized skills, one good reason why a person pays for the services of a professional painting contractor. When it comes to painting the interior or exterior of your home you have time restraints, convenience, safety and the health of your family to consider, among other factors.
Safety and Health Comes First:
Climbing on ladders, working with solvents, and dust inhalation can be hazardous work. Professional contractors are “safety conscious,” and experienced to handle these situations. If you opt to do the painting yourself, there is risk of unnecessary injury.
Homes built before 1978 may have been painted with lead-based paint, proven to pose serious health risks when scraped and sanded in preparation for repainting. Dust and paint chips from lead-based paint are a health threat to exposed individuals, working around lead-based paint, represents another safety hazard. A federal law will be going in to effect April 22, 2010 that mandates all painting contractors and anyone who will be working with lead paint to have certain certifications and proper training.
Quality Work Guaranteed:
A Painting Company will prepare surfaces properly for painting. Poorly prepared surfaces affect the appearance and quality of the new paint and could cause paint failure. Properly prepare surfaces for repainting is time consuming, but yields great end results and increases durability of newly painted surfaces.
A qualified painting contractor is familiar with the different types of coatings, equipment, tools, safety, preparation, carries the proper insurance and certifications to provide you an everlasting paint job while keeping you and your family safe.

There are many reasons to hire a pro. We have the tools, training and experience to use the best materials for the job and complete it more efficiently. We know techniques to cut a perfect straight line, roll a wall with leaving roller marks, etc.

Great info. Chris, taking the words right out of my mouth! With that being said, Pros can get the job done in record time also. Typically when homeowners paint themselves, they can take all summer long painting what normally takes us 3-4 days. And like you said, clean straight caulk lines.
Therefore, if a homeowner knows what they are doing, I appreciate the initiative, but if they don't really feel comfortable, leave painting to the Pros.
