Q: Do most interior design people have access to software that will show clients what rooms will look like with different color and furniture options?
Is this sort of thing just for high-end designers and decorators or do most design pros have access to this kind of thing now? I think seeing a photographic image can really help you get a feel for what a room will be like. More so than a sketch. ...I would hate to think about designing a room and then not loving the outcome.

It is not necessarily reserved for the high end designers. What I see is that lots of the professionals in the field have been slow to adopt the technology. You can usually find someone in your area or even online who can create renderings for you of the space so you really can get a better feel for the space.

Many interior designers that I work with who use CAD programs, use it for the purpose of space planning. The furniture, window treatments, floor coverings and colors are representative of what you may be purchasing. This can help you visualize, but much of the reason why you hire a certain designer is based on trust- a computer program cannot give you an exact rendition of your project, it can only be an aid to the process. There are certain details that you must leave up to your designer because computers are not capable of creating every detail. Many designers will use a combination of computer rendering and hand drawing to get the best results. And many of the more experienced designers are still doing hand drafting.
Put your faith in your designer, and not the computer program!
