Q: What is the best type of material for crown molding?
There are many choices for crown molding from MDF to wood species. Wood is very expensive for the most part, MDF cheap, but will the characteristics change depending on the type?

MDF is not a good product. After install the nails exsplode the wood particals and creats a large dimple that spackle can not hide. I charge more money in labor to paint mdf and I am sure I'm not alone. I reconmend preprimed wood molding. Your up front cost are hire but your bottom line should be lower (eg lower labor cost to prep and paint). Also it last longer and it is varnable to water damage if you have a leak. Good luck.

Ps I think the water damage part might be a little overkill.

MDF is an inferior product in my opinion compared to wood. Wood is by far easier to work with also. MDF is cheaper but you get what you pay for as with most products. MDF is easliy damaged when cutting and installing. compared to working with wood.
