Q: I want a radiant heat floor. If I have 3/4" sub-flooring can I just router a 1/2" groove into it and put the alum. flashing and tubing in it?
INstead of tearing up the existing sub-floor, why couldn't a person router the channels needed then place the pex tubing in these channels.
A: Not a good idea
Routering a groove into the subfloor will weaken the flooring to the point that it is unsafe. Your best bet for installing pex tubing for a retro-fit radiant heat floor is to use the aluminum panels that are pre grooved to recieve the pex. The panels cover the entire floor and are 1/2" thick. Your finish flooring will be installed directly over top of the panels.
