Mount Prospect, ILA:
Brazilian Walnut (Ipe) is a truly beautiful species. The coloring can vary from a light yellowish tan to almost a blackish brown. When it is newly milled you will see a large range of color and then with time and exposure it will darken ending with a medium to dark brown color. Ipe is 185% harder than Northern Red Oak with a Janka rating of 3680 and is 7% more stable.
The cost of this flooring really varies with grade and style. It will also vary depending on if you purchase via e-tail or retail. You can find this floor from $3.50/Sf up to $10/Sf or more. Because it is an imported species be sure you you know where it's coming from and don't purchase illegally harvested products. You can look up a manufacturers green policy online and do your part to support responsible forestry. Just look for the FSC Logo.
