Cork is probably the most "green" flooring you can get. Unlike most trees, the value is derived not from the lumber of the trunk, but from the bark of the trees, which are grown on farms and harvested every decade. This means that the value of cork lies not in felling the trees, but keeping them alive and healthy for generations.
Cork bark is unusually thick and is made up of millions of tiny prism-shaped air pockets. This bark is initially sent to a factory to create stoppers for wine bottles. Cork flooring is then created from post-industrial by-product of the bottle-stopper industry. This "waste" material is ground up and then formed into sheets using minimal amounts of adhesive to bind the particles together under high pressure. So not only is cork environmentally sustainable, but it is also non-toxic, and healthy.
