Q: Do ceiling fans really save energy?
Personally, I really like ceiling fans, whether they save energy or not. But, I was curious... do ceiling fans really save energy? I mean, I guess air-conditioners use a lot of power. But, ceiling fans run constantly too. Do homeowners really see a reduction in their monthly energy consumption after they install ceiling fans?

Carmichael, CAA: Yes, if you use them without AC
If you are using a ceiling fan instead of an air conditioner, yes it uses less energy. An air conditioning unit requires more power, so a ceiling fan in conjunction with an ac unit would not be efficient. If you are concerned with saving energy when it is hot outside, a whole house fan is the best energy saving tool of all because it cools your house down by 10 degrees and you only have it on for 10 minutes at a time.
