Q: What are some new trends in Kitchen design?
My husband and I were going to re-do our kitchen a little over a year and a half ago. Unfortunately, he lost his job and we put that on the shelf. Now, he has a new, stable job (yay!) and we're thinking about remodeling again. Since it was a bit of a tough time, I avoided looking in magazines and thinking about it... So, I'm behind! Can a professional "kitchen remodeler" tell me about the latest trends in kitchen design? Any pointers as to what is popular and new in counters, flooring, countertops, etc? ...Appliances? ...Colors? I am so excited to catch up and get started!

Formica has several colors out now in their 180FX family. Most are great, beware of the 77 finish though as it wears through after a few years.
Pionite (stonex) and Wilsonart have both fired back with new colors of their own.
Some folks are leaning more toward zones than using the work triangle. I think I'm getting to be one of those folks. It's how commercial kitchens work.
Forget trends though. What's best for you?

Chatham, ONA: Glass Counters
A quickly emerging trend is towards glass counter tops. About the same cost as granite, it can be lit using LED, and can be done in any colour or pattern you can dream up.

Springfield, PAA: The skys the limit....
Well I guess I should say your budget is the limit. The trends differ from region to region. Where my company is based (suburbs of Philadelphia), I find that not alot of my customers are going with newest contemporay styles. They are sticking with more of the classic styles of kitchen and using a lot of the newer products to spice the kitchen up.
Lighting has become a one of the main topics of discussion with my clients. Low-voltage under cabinet lighting is a big hit today along with zoned and dimmable recessed lighting.
For countertops, we have been using alot of the man-made quatz products (Zodiaq by DuPont and Silestone). These products have a similar look to natural stone with a lot less maintenance.
The standard 30" upper cabinet seems to be a thing of the past in most kitchen today. If your house has 8' ceilings, the new standard is 36" upper cabinets with a 2 piece crown molding to the ceiling.
Alot of people who spend alot of time cooking and entertaining in their kitchen have moved away from tile floors and are using laminate, hardwood or engineered flooring. These products are more comfortable for standing for a long period of time.
The last main trend I have come across in older homes is to combine the large dining rooms with the generally smaller kitchen. Many people today prefer a larger great room then individual rooms for cooking and entertaining.
Hope this helps.
