Q: I want to update our kitchen but have limited resources. Would painting the cupboards and putting in granite counter top make sense?

I've talked with lots of people who painted their cabinets and were very happy with the results. If you don't like it, you can always paint over it...
Granite might be expensive though. Probably more than new cabinets would be. You might try concrete. I did my own concrete countertops this year and am very happy. If I hadn't been trying to keep it a secret from my wife, the project would probably have gone a lot better. It's all documented on my site if you want to have a look (five part article, with pictures in the last one).
There's also an interview there with someone who paints professionally.

Great Question! The newest craze painting here in Colorado is putting a car-like paint finish on kitchen cabinets. Reason is replacing kitchen cabinets can be very expensive, then second to that is refacing which costs say 25-30% cheaper than fully replacing. Painting kitchen cabinets is much cheaper than refacing. Several steps involved painting them correctly, making this not some cheap paint job, as the worst thing to do is paint a kitchen cabinet or cupboard, having the paint chip off months later. Painting is the most inexpensive thing you can do for your kitchen, rooms, interior or exterior, and highly recommend it. Granite on the other hand can get quite costly, and should be installed after cabinets are painted anyway, thereby allowing you to spread out the cost a bit.
