Q: How can I make my own butcher-block island?
What are the procedures to make my own butcher-block island? I am pretty crafty and think that this is a project that I might be able to do on my own, but I need a little guidance as to what materials to buy and what steps to follow in order to make a beautiful island. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

With some time and a little bit of skill, a homeowner can make their own butcher block countertops for an island or wherever. You can probably find good advice on the internet. Try typing in a search engine. The process should involve glueing up maple boards, lettting the glue try, cutting to size, sanding and sealing. Just keep in mind if you are planning on using the countertops for actuall cooking (i.e. food contact) to use a food-safe sealer such as mineral oil. DO NOT use vegetable oils for sealing as they will go rancid (rot)!
