Q: Soapstone countertops versus granite - can a contractor compare these for me?
I am a first time homeowner and home-remodeler. Honestly, I had never heard of soapstone countertops before a week ago. We like the look a lot, but don't know much about soapstone. How do soapstone countertops compare to granite ones? Is there a clear better choice here or is it more of a personal choice? Thanks.

I think Soapstone is gorgeous. It does have some drawbacks. It is soft, so it will scratch and it needs to be oiled frequently to bring out its sheen. It is typically more expensive than granite. The great thing about it is that it does not stain because it is much less porous than granite. It has a very soft texture, and wonderful veining. You will need to go to a soapstone supplier to choose your slabs as they vary quite a bit, and are typically only available in limited colors.
The choice is ultimately yours, but if you are looking for something unique over the widely and many times overly used granite, choose Soapstone, it will be the focal point of your remodel.
