Q: Stainless steel countertops?
I was just at an open house for a new condo building. In the two units we looked at, the builder had installed stainless steel countertops. I had never heard of putting stainless steel countertops in a home kitchen before. They were super cool. Can anyone tell me about these? How do these hold up? How do you care for these countertops? How does the price compare to stone countertops? Thank you!

Indianapolis, INA: Stainless Counters
Stainless steel is a great counter material, as long as you accept that it will scratch and wear, much like a SS sink. You'll hate those first few scratches, but over time the wear becomes a patina and part of the look of the material.
The cost depends on the size, shape, and accessories (sinks, splashes, etc.), but overall is comparable to a stone counter. We use a fabricator who also builds stainless steel counters and work surfaces for commercial applications like restaurants, labs, and cafeterias.
It's an easy material to disinfect and clean, but hard water will leave spots that take a little more effort to remove.
