Q: I'm planning a kitchen remodel. Why should I hire an architect?
I have been thinking of remodeling my kitchen for the past couple years. My business did well this year so I treating myself to the kitchen remodel finally. I want it to be perfect. I have ideas but I have been told I should hire an architect before contacting a contractor.

It is in the best interest of anyone beginning a construction addition/remodel to hire a Registered Architect. They are authorized by the state and perform the many facets involved in a construction project. The architect is key player in assuring that the proper balance between owner, contractor and designer is achieved. They are trained and licensed in safety, structural design, zoning and building codes. The architect’s responsibility is to bring the client’s vision into 3 dimensional reality. In addition, when putting the job out for bids, each contractor will be bidding on the exact same specifications.

I would dissagree with always hiring an Architect, a good design/build company can give you a good design and save you a ton of money, in my experience a project can be done well and even better some times without an architect, as a contractor I have more trouble and feel the customer gets less for their $ with and architect.

Unless you are planning a major addition I agree with Kyle that you do not need to hire an architect. Start with a Certified Kitchen Designer. They can help you with the hurdles of remodeling. Combined with a good contractor your job should not have any unpleasant surprises.
