I think he's right about not notching out a 2x10 or 2x12, but that method is traditionally how stairs have been made. I have not purchased Tim's Ebook, but would guess that it will get you through the project nicely.
There are also wafer board things that ride along the top edge of a 2x6, another way to eliminate notching out stringers.
