Q: Is leaving an old roof under a new one beneficial or a way for a contractor to cut costs?
Having a contractor do a remodel/new construction (lengthening & widening existing structure) that requires a new roof (higher ridge, steeper slope). At this stage the contractor is leaving old roof under the new one (currently constructing). When I asked about it he said it adds insulation properties. It sounds like a crock and a way for them to cut costs by not removing.

That's a crock of crap! It's always better to remove old roofing before installing new roofing. Im not positive, but I believe this may also void warranties on new shingles.
We never advise people to leave existing shingles!
