Q: When buying land for your dream home, what should you look for?
My wife and are looking to sell our house and buy some land up in Wine Country. We will of course hire a number of professionals to help us do this. I am sure they will help guide our purchase. However, for my own knowledge, in general, what are things that you should look for when buying a parcel of land for new construction. What makes a piece of property particularly suitable for a house? Thanks.

It is difficult to tell someone how to find the "dream" property for their "dream" home. There are so many factors to think about. I will list a couple that I find most important. If I leave any out I hope somebody will back me up and add them.
1. First and foremost you need to think about the style of house you want. If it is a split floor plan (where you walk in the front on one level and out the back at another level). In that scenario you would have to find a piece of land with some elevation change.
2. The next thing you want to be careful of is drainage. Make sure that your property won't be in a flood zone.
When looking at property try to envision where you house will sit. Think about the trees, layout of your driveway, and how you want your yard to feel. I hope this was helpful.
