Q: Looking to install new siding on my house and am questioning the value of foam board and insulated siding.
I have a frame house I built in 1990 with 2x6 exterior walls. When built, I installed Johns Manville R-21 insulation and standard Norandex vinyl siding. Now 21 years later, some of the siding is broken and I'm thinking of residing the house. Since I'm going to pull the siding off, I was wondering if there would be a big advantage to addition 1" thick foam board to the entire exterior, and then using foam-filled insulated vinyl siding. Also note that we are in the process of replacing all of the old Weather-Shield double-hung windows with Simonton Casement windows which should be done by the end of June. The siding is a project for late summer or early fall.
