Q: Why is copper pipe worth so much?
I watch HGTV a lot. All the flipping house shows talks about thieves gutting their copper pipe because it is worth so much. Do the places that pay for this type of piping understand it could potentially be stolen from someones house? Do they care? Should I worry about it happening to my house if I go on vacation?

North Charleston, SCA: In general, you should not worry.
If your home is fully completed and you live in a reasonably safe neighborhood, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Thieves are generally opportunistic and will steal pipes/wires/coils when they are exposed and easily accessible.
The metal scrap yards DO know that a good bit of it is stolen, but there is really nothing they can do about it, since pipes and wires aren't exactly serialized or tracked in any way. It's a crummy situation, but that's the deal.
