Q: Who makes better interior doors JELD-WEN or Masonite?
Hi, we are picking out some new interior doors. We like a couple different options from Masonite and JELD-WEN. Do any pros or homeowners have an opinion on who makes a better door? Thanks.

It definitely depends on what kind of doors specifically. In our experience as a custom door manufacturer, we found that Masonite's MDF stile-and-rail doors are both attractive and affordable. For flush wood veneer doors, we prefer Jeld Wen's doors for both appearance and structural stability.

As a finish carpenter who hangs interior doors for a living, I can say that I prefer jeldwen doors as they use domestic pine for their stiles as opposed to import materials which are prone to warping, splitting and deflection of fasteners especially when screwing in hinges and door hardware such as handles.

Kyle A from
Adkins and Sons Inc.
Livonia, MIA: interior door choice
I personally have and installed Jeld-wen interior doors in my home. They are stain grade maple veneer, I really love the look and ease of install. I've also installed Masonite doors for a customer, I made sure t get the mid - higher quality door slab. If you are planing on painting this will probably work well.
Be aware these manufacturers normally supply the door slabs. I normally use pre-hung doors which includes the frame and hinge hardware. This could have a huge effect on the quality of product and price. There are many different jamb materials from solid wood species to composite. Most small to medium size lumber yards will have more choices and knowledge about the jambs than a big box store.

Cathy S
Pottsville, PAA: ANYTHING BUT JELD-WEN PRODUCTS
I have been employed for years at Jeld-Wen in making their products. There have been countless times where I spotted rotted wood, cracked wood, sappy wood, bowed wood and on-and-on. I brought it to my supervisors' attention and was told to use it anyway because it gets "covered up" and the customer would never be able to see it. How's that for "Reliability for life" I would guess that is the reason they are doing more repair/warranty work that filling new orders !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To be honest, I wouldn't use their windows if they replaced every single window in my home for FREE !!! Think long and hard about your choices and my advice to you would be "BUYER BEWARE"

A: not impressed with Jeld Wen
the 1 3/8" x 30 " x80" doors have only a nominal 1" head and foot rail; by-pass rolling hardware and undercutting would exclude using these doors as they need to be cut down to 79" to fit a usual 80" trimmed opening for existing replacement. The warranty is voided if you cut more than 3/16" off either top or bottom per Jeld Wen; also not enough 'meat' remains to screw in the by-pass hardware...the screws go into the door's hollow void.

A: It Depends
Both manufacture doors according to their customer specifications. So a door from either can vary substantially depending on the retailer you purchase from. You really can't compare on brand alone
