Q: We are half way through a remodel and wondering if we should give a holiday tip to the contractor and his crew. Tough economy here and think it would
be appreciated. Appropriate?

Patrick C from

Wantagh, NYA: Should I tip a contractor?
I would never ask for or let one of my employees accept a tip. The reason is this-- My employees are SUPPOSED to go above and beyond in all situations. It sets a poor precedent-- you paid for a job well done, don t tip just because you got what you paid for. If you want to do something nice, buy them coffee-- thats all that is needed to make them feel appreciated. You are all ready spending enough of your hard earned money.

Greenwood, INA: Tips to contractors
If you feel the crew has gone above and beyond the call of duty then sure, feel free to tip them. However, do not feel obligated. Any reputable company should be compensating their employees adequately and should be rewarding them with praise or incentives for taking care of their clients. Happy clients lead to referrals which is what keeps the best of companies with consistent business for many years.
