Livonia, MIA: Fiberglass over vinyl
Some of the differences change because of Brand but the following should help.
Energy: They both have very similar energy ratings. Most of a window is glass, the more efficient the glass, the better efficient window. Weatherstripping and design also play a major role in this too, a higher quality product will have have best components.
Fiberglass positives:
strength of frame
generally more visible glass (unless modeled after a wood products)
paintable (some brands are not paintable)
stainable interior wood veneer options (some brands do not offer this)
frames have very low expansion/ contraction rate, and easy to clean.
custom sizes
new construction and replacement frames.
easy to operate
excellent warranties
Fiberglass negatives:
Cost can be 30-50% higher than vinyl.
if hit with hard object frame can be cracked.
can not build arches and circle tops because of pultrusion process. Some brands manufacture these from resins or aluminum wood combination. This sacrifices warranty and energy efficiency.
longer lead times.
Some companies say negative things about how mechanically fastened corners. I do not think this poses a problem since the use high quality industrial adhesives and fasteners/ brackets.
Vinyl positives:
usually solid color through frame
easy to clean
welded corners on most brands
many options
custom sizes
can make many shapes
new construction and replacement frames.
cost effective
easy to operate
excellent warranties
short lead times
Vinyl negatives:
frames are bulky (less glass = less light)
many options lower warranty( color bonding)
higher expansion/ contraction rates
frames can crack (cold weather makes frames more brittle)
Overall both products are normally an improvement over older windows. I recommend going to three local window dealers showrooms and see the visual differences. Make sure they carry Vinyl, fiberglass, and wood products. Check out some of there installations and research the brands.
