What are the benefits of a homeowner acting as their own GC? Would you ever recommend it? Do the perceived benefits often pan out? What are the disadvantages and pitfalls related to being your own general contractor?

Benefits are saving money.
Disadvantages are that you may not see all of the details that can fall through the cracks, which can mean added cost or costly delays.
If you are detail oriented, can find the right subs and ask the right questions you might save money. But you may also pull all of your hair out and possibly start a fued with your spouse that may never end.

Adkins and Sons Inc.
Livonia, MIA: How much spare time do you have?
I am a remodeling contractor and thought it would not be hard to build my own house. I was able to save a considerable amount of money and build a beautiful home with maxed out upgrades for about the same price as it would take to have standard features. It caused many of personal issues and took way longer than I expected. I was working over 50 hrs a week and managing my home on the side plus doing much of the work. It ended up causing personal problems that have turned out good but I pretty much lost a couple yrs of my life. Also how much do you know about the type of project and do you have a source of trusted contractors? I was born into the building industry and have probably had hands on experience in almost all fields prior to building.
Good luck with your project.
