Q: Who makes a better entry door Provia or Therma-Tru?
I know Provia and Therma-Tru are two frequently recommended entry doors. Is there any reason to choose one versus the other? Or, are these brands essentially interchangeable? Meaning, both high-quality, low-issue. Thanks.

A: Never heard of Provia
We deal in Thermatru and Jeld Wen, both are great doors. I understand that there is a Thermatru line sold at the box stores, and that the quality is different (you get what you pay for I guess)
There has been some grumbling since Thermatru started using a new type of sill over the last couple of years (people say they leak) but it's hard to tell how much of that are the doors themselves, or how they were installed.
No gripes about Jeld Wen that I've heard, and that salesman can usually come pretty close to a Thermatru price.

Livonia, MIA: Both great products but Provia is better.
I deal with Provia, Therma Tru, Jeldwen, and Pella. They all make great Products, but hands down Provia is the best quality as far as warranty, and construction. I think there is more attention to detail in the Provia products. Its hard to tell from the outside but if you look at the way Signet fiberglass door is constructed compared to the others, you will understand.

Powder Springs, GAA: My introduction to Provia
I was just quoted a price of $8400 for a Signet entry door and two sidelights. St Jane Glass, the pane goes down about 2/3rds the way on the door and sidelights. I've been reading some eye-opening forums on the excellence of this company's doors, but I am in shock over this quote. I'm not even sure if it includes hardware.
I am pretty well convinced that Provia is tops in the trade, but can someone tell me how accurate/inaccurate this quote is?

Raleigh, NCA: Provia Quote
We just bought a Provia door. We are getting the Signet full glass (st. jane) with clear sidelights. We were able to haggle our salesman down to 6100. Our sidelights are going to be the Legacy steel due to the fact they are only 10 inches and Siget only comes in 12 and up.

Wagoner, OKA: Provia Bargain
I was in a flea market type place just yesterday and founds some beautiful entry doors that I liked. I took a pic, and came home to research, and found that they are Provia, Steel, Barcelona style decorative glass. I know NOTHING about construction, doors, or anything, so I had no clue if the price they had them marked as was reasonable or not... After digging and digging through google, trying to get an idea of what these doors would normally sell for (does NO companies list their prices online??)... I'm thinking I will definiately be going back to purchase 2 of these at $260 each.

A: ProVia doors are most certainly The Best!
You must see a cutaway sample for comparrision, and realize the ProVia doors almost always include prefinishing and lock hardware. Also ProVia uses and manufactures the most energy efficient glass inserts.

A: I just purchased a Provia Legacy Steel entry door
Superior product except for one thing - the threshold is really high and a hazard as far as I am concerned. It is more than in inch higher than my previous threshold and is thicker than the height of the toe of my shoe. I will have to tell every guest as they are leaving to mind their step. Worried about homeowners insurance claims.

A: Provia all day!
Two Neighbors did Thermatrue & Pella Architecture series before I decided to replace mine. Did some research and went Provia for much more $. Both are not happy after seeing and feeling my Provia. Pella guy is already thinking replacement after 4 years! TT guy was first and already had issues with leaks and finish - leak could be installer to be fair. Provia just feels like WOW in weight and quality compared to the others. Sales guy kept trying to downsell to save me 4-5k & kept apologizing for Provia price. Why - I have learned and believe you get what you pay for. Compliments on Provia door are constant - even by solicitors.

A: Can't recommend Therma-Tru
I've had lots of problems with my Therma-tru door! It was not manufactured properly. First the frame system was not true/square, second, the core cutouts for the doorglass were cut too large and unevenly at that so the grille did not completely cover the opening!! We only noticed the oversize problem on one of the two side lights at installation. The factory sent a new frame and core for the one side light; that was nice, but then after a big rain, water was pouring out the bottom of the second side light! Same problem with the opening and the grille didn't stand a chance of keeping a seal! Now the black seal between the glass panes is oozing out from the margins into the visible area of the glass. I like my local dealer, but there is NO WAY I can recommend a Therma-tru door.

I have a thermatru door that was installed in 1994. It has rotted away at the bottom a number of times and I have only had the money to cut out and refill. I went to finally put in a new door and the only thing in my price range is another therma tru. I am told that they have fixed the rotting problem. I have asked them to paint the new door for free to compensate for their poor 1994 product. Waiting to hear back.

A: Therma Tru Classic Craft Fiber Classic and Smooth Star. Now that is apples to apples.
Here are some things to consider when comparing Provia and Therma Tru.
The Provia line only comes in premium models and typically sold and installed by remodeling contractors. If they have a less then premium line, it's probably sold under a different name so as not to taint the Provia brand.
Therma Tru on the other hand, is installed by some very big homebuilders such as Ryan, NV Homes and Richmond American to name a few. Do you really think they're going to put a premium door in their homes? Also you can purchase middle and low end Therma Tru in any Home Depot or Lowe's which are made specifically for the big box stores. They will order the premium Therma Tru lines also.
If you look at the Therma Tru Classic Craft and Fiber Classic lines, I promise you they compare feature to feature and look to look to any Provia door. Also the medium and builder grade Therma Tru doors use pine. The Classic Craft, Fiber classic and Smooth Star fiberglass doors all use Alaskan Cypress which is extremely rot resistance as well as composite material to reinforce hardware application points. If something does deteriorate, their warranty covers rot, weather stripping, water penetration, hardware and the sweep on the bottom of the door for his long as you own the home.

A: Correction to my 9/1/16 Post
When I stated that some very big home builders use Therma Tru, I failed to note that most builders use builder grade versions not the Therma Tru premium doors. So when someone earlier mentioned that his door from 1994 had some issues, that's to be expected. The higher end doors have rot proof jambs, fiberglass panels and composite components along with the cypress.

A: The Thermatru door installed on our new house is junk
It is a main entry door Rustic collection fiberglass with a Provincial style glass in the door, two sidelights and transom. the door style is CC107. It was installed in September, 2014. In 2016 the seal between the panes of glass failed due to the metal soldering bowing out At the top and bottom edge of the glass insert causing the decorative glass to separate from the soldering. Thermatru agreed to send a new glass panel but refused to take care of installing it. They said to look online to see how to install it myself. I am a 68 year old woman. As a comparison, we had a Pella sliding patio door installed on the back of the house and when it became difficult to open and close they sent a team free of charge to adjust it even though the warranty period had
passed.

A: Great Thermatru experience
I purchased my home new in 1994 with a Thermatru entry door. I am extremely pleased and have not had one issue with it. The seal is perfect to this day. I will admit it is under cover with the porch overhang but I would repurchase this door in a second. It does have wood look finish but I'm not sure of the model.

A: Ask Me, I'm a Home Remodeling Planner
My job is to help home owners tackle these kinds of "600-lb Gorillas" for homeowners, build quality into their budget, and set up a plan to follow that helps them prepare for a multi-project home remodeling. My job is to not only "price condition" the home owner, but to make recommendations what contractor or Remodeling company they should contact to carry out the job.
ProVia exterior entry doors are hands down - the VERY BEST doors money can buy. The problem is that not every homeowner can afford such superior high quality and structurally sound doors to serve as protection for their home and family, as well as provide a visually pleasing entry to welcome all who visit.
But, yes a price of over $8000 is inline with a high end door such as the ones provia provide. Additionally, these products all carry a lifetime warranty for the life of the home, so you'll never have to buy another.
Higher end doors and windows elevate the equity in a home more than any other remodeling product, which is a smart move, especially if you're going to be selling your home very soon. Windows and doors also qualify for programs such as PACE (property assessed clean energy), which allows homeowners to create a "green-friendly" home.
My father always said,"if you buy quality... you only cry once"
If you can for your home - always buy the best! It will pay you back in the long run!

I agree if you buy quality you only have to buy it once. I would go with the most expensive long lasting door. https://conservationconstructionofdallas.com/doors/
