Q: Is it normal when replacing windows to rip out part of the exterior wall around each window?
This is what our person is recommending. Is this the best way to replace windows?

If you have a Dryvit or EFS system exterior of your home and the existing windows used nail fins underneath, you will more than likely need to remove some exterior wall around for proper replacement. I have been certified through a program called Installation Masters and that is how they explain proper installation in EFS type of home. Here in Michigan it is very uncommon but I know it Cali it is much more popular. I would check and see if your contractor is installation master certified and get 3 quotes from other companies. We are Pella Certified Contractors and that is a requirement to be a PCC. We are Milgard Dealers also. I know both companies a pretty careful on the dealers they partner with.
Good luck with your project.

Even with simple siding we will often remove some of the siding around the windows when we replace- and then use new construction windows rather than replacement windows.
This reduces potential air gaps and allows for better insulation, better water sealant, and a larger window.
